The pair accused of stealing a vehicle belonging to a New Hampshire couple found buried in a shallow grave last month in Texas made their first appearance in court Friday.

Wearing orange jumpsuits, Adam Curtis Williams and Amanda Noverr appeared in a Kleberg County courtroom to face felony theft charges and were assigned attorneys.

While they haven't been charged directly in the deaths of James Butler, 48, and Michelle Butler, 46, authorities say they say they continue to gather evidence and have their minds open to other possibilities.

Williams and Noverr, who have been dating, were wanted in connection with the Butlers' death after they were seen in a surveillance photo crossing into Mexico in the victims' vehicle.

Williams had his own vehicle impounded just days beforehand, according to an arrest affadavit released by the Kleberg County Sheriff's Office. He had been pulled over for not wearing his seatbelt and was issued a citation as well.

That was three days before Oct. 23, when the Butlers, of Rumney, New Hampshire, went missing.

The Butlers had been traveling the United States in an RV since last year, and their deaths left family members heartbroken.
