NH Prep School With Sex Abuse Claims Removing Rector Names From Buildings

The board of trustees president at St. Paul's School in Concord said William Oates and William Matthews' names will be removed from buildings

A New Hampshire prep school with a history of sexual abuse claims is removing the names of two former rectors from campus buildings.

In a weekend letter to the school community, the board of trustees president at St. Paul's School in Concord said the name of William Oates, rector from 1970 to 1982, will be removed from the performing arts building. The name of William Matthews, rector from 2005 to 2011, will be removed from the hockey center.

Several reports commissioned by the school found credible evidence of abuse among around 20 faculty members over several decades. Victims have said their allegations were often ignored by school officials.

President Archibald Cox writes the decision "aligns with the school's values and priority placed on honesty, integrity, and student safety and well-being."
