A New York man has admitted to his role in a scheme that installed skimmers on bank ATMs across Rhode Island to steal more than $709,000 from unsuspecting victims.
Thirty-one-year-old Moises Morales Cano pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in federal court in Providence.
U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha says the skimmers captured information from magnetic strips on 1,329 victims' credit cards, which was then encoded onto counterfeit cards that were used to make fraudulent transactions.
The financial institutions affected in Rhode Island include Greenwood Credit Union in Warwick, an unidentified Rhode Island Credit Union branch, a BankRI branch in Johnstown and Bank of Newport's Barrington and Jamestown branches.
Cano will be sentenced on July 20.
