Letter Says Man Who Kidnapped, Raped Teen Girl Wanted to Testify

Court documents show a New Hampshire man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping a 14-year-old girl and raping her repeatedly during nine months of captivity wanted to testify in his own defense at trial.

The Boston Globe reports Nathaniel Kibby wrote in a letter to Belknap County Superior Court Judge Larry Smukler dated May 13, 2016 that "there is no doubt whatsoever that I will execute my right to testify."

Kibby pleaded guilty to kidnapping and other charges on May 26, 2016. He was sentenced to 45 to 90 years in prison. He had been scheduled to go on trial in June.

The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled last month that letters Kibby wrote during that time can be made public.

Kibby's attorneys didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
