Nearly 1,400 Runners to Race in Honor of Slain Officer

Officer Arkell was shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute last May

Nearly 1,400 runners are taking part in a first-time race in honor of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty last year in Brentwood, New Hampshire.

The Officer Stephen Arkell Community 5K Race is starting Saturday afternoon at Brentwood Swasey Central School. Race registration proceeds will benefit a newly created memorial scholarship fund.

Arkell was shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute May 12, 2014. He had served with the Brentwood Police Department for 17 years and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

His wife, Heather Arkell, is addressing the crowd. Joining her are Gov. Maggie Hassan and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, who is running in the race.
