Nephew: Ex-Providence Mayor Cianci Died of Sudden Blood Loss

Former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci's unexpected death last month was caused by sudden blood loss.

Cianci's nephew, Dr. Brad Turchetta, said Tuesday that the ex-mayor lost a lot of blood following a bowel obstruction, and died hours later of hemorrhagic shock.

The 74-year-old Cianci was taping his weekly TV show on the evening of Jan. 27 when he began experiencing severe abdominal pain. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital and died the next morning.

Cianci was treated for cancer in 2014 and underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

He served two stints as mayor for 21 years, holding that office longer than any other mayor. He ran again in 2014 as an independent but lost.
