New England Enjoys Bumper Crop of Apples

Local farmers say we’re in the midst of a bumper crop of apples around New England.

A perfect combination of weather and natural tree cycles are the primary reasons.

At Smolak Farms in North Andover, the strong start to the fall season is much needed.

Last year, Michael Smolak says he lost more than $100,000 in the wake of the Merrimack Valley gas explosions. His farm wasn’t directly impacted, but people stayed away during the recovery.

"We met with them about a month and a half ago, and to their credit, their loss adjuster says 'we're going to make you whole' and I hope they live up to their word because that would make a big difference," Smolak said of his recent interactions with Columbia Gas.

Smolak Farms expects "u-pick" apples to be available through much of this month, depending on demand.
