New Hampshire Day Care Owner Convicted of Reckless Conduct

A New Hampshire day care owner has been convicted of reckless conduct in connection with the death of a 4-year-old girl left under her supervision.

The Valley News reports that jurors on Friday also found 56-old Mary Ellen Burritt guilty of operating an unlicensed day care.

Police say Willa Clark was found hanging by her coat in March 2014 in the backyard of Burritt's home day care in Enfield. She was pronounced dead two days later at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Prosecutors say Burritt recklessly put children in danger by allowing the youngsters to play alone without an adult present.

Attorney Peter DeCato countered that Burritt could see or hear the children at all times.

Burritt will be sentenced at a later date on the misdemeanor charges.
