NH Rescuers Get to Stranded Hiker in Waist-Deep Snow

Rescuers in New Hampshire's White Mountains have come to the aid of a hiker caught in waist-deep snow, high winds and a below-zero wind chill.

State Fish and Game conservation officers were alerted to an emergency beacon activated in the vicinity of Mount Madison. They found it was registered to Andrew Carlson, of Madeira Beach, Florida, who had departed Tuesday from Pinkham Notch to hike south along the Appalachian Trail. They learned he was attempting to complete a large section of the presidential mountain range before the weather got too bad.

Carlson was found in the Madison Spring Hut on the trail on Wednesday afternoon. He was cold but was able to hike out on his own.
