Three inmates in a New Hampshire jail overdosed Tuesday morning, and authorities are trying to figure out how the contraband got inside.

Staff members at the Strafford County Jail in Dover called first responders for help just before 8:30 a.m., saying they were dealing with multiple medical emergencies, according to investigators.

By the time the ambulances arrived, staff members had already administered the overdose-reversing drug Narcan.

The three inmates, who have not been identified, were then taken to a nearby hospital.

"No one wants to see people hurt by misuse of opioids or any other type of drugs and if that's what we end up having here, we are going to do everything we can within limits of the law to make sure it doesn't happen again and make sure anyone involved is brought to justice," Strafford County Sheriff Dave Dubois said.

Sheriff Dubois said the three inmates are expected to make a full recovery and eventually will be brought back to the jail.

    The investigation is ongoing.
