Firefighters: Blaze Destroys House, 7 People Displaced

Fire crews in Rhode Island spent several hours battling a blaze that destroyed a Newport home.

Newport Fire Chief Brian Dugan says a total of seven people were inside the 2-family home at the time of the Sunday afternoon blaze. All of the people got out safely.

Dugan says the second and third floors of the house are a total loss between damage from fire, water and the roof collapsing. He also says the first floor has severe water damage. Crews remained on the scene Sunday night to monitor.

Dugan says it's believed the fire began on the second-floor deck and spread quickly. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

The displaced people are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
