No Bail for Man Accused of Killing Ex, Setting Apartment on Fire

Born Smith was arraigned Wednesday on murder and arson charges in the death of 32-year-old Aliss Collins

A Providence, Rhode Island, man charged with killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend then setting her apartment on fire has been held without bail.

Born Smith was arraigned Wednesday on murder and arson charges in the death of 32-year-old Aliss Collins.

He didn't enter a plea.

Firefighters found Collins inside a third-floor apartment of a burning Cranston house on Nov. 13.

She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The fetus did not survive.

The medical examiner determined that Collins had been beaten and the cause of death was described as blunt force trauma and smoke inhalation.

Police have said the 29-year-old Smith and Collins had been "intimate partners," but the relationship was strained. His lawyer did not comment.
