No Bail for Man Charged With Beating Woman

A western Massachusetts man police say beat a woman so severely that she was "barely recognizable" has been held without bail as a dangerous person.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that Tom Kirby, of Lanesborough, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and dangerousness hearing Wednesday to a charge of assault and battery on a family or household member.

His alleged victim called police at about 3 a.m. Saturday. She told them that the 42-year-old Kirby beat her at a campground.

Authorities say the woman had bruises and swelling to the left side of her face and could barely open her eye.

Kirby's attorney said his client had no marks or bruises on his hands that would indicate he'd struck anyone and suggested the woman received her injuries in some other manner.
