Off-Duty Boston Firefighter Dies Following Motorcycle Crash

A Boston firefighter has died from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash while off duty Tuesday night, according to department officials.

Justin Poitras died on July 4 as a result of the crash.

The Boston Fire Department is remembering Poitras in a tweet as "a son, brother, USMC combat veteran, firefighter and friend to all."

The tweet went on to say Poitras had "an infectious smile that will be missed."

Authorities did not provide details on the crash but according to the Boston Globe, the crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Clapp and Boston streets in the city's Dorchester neighborhood.

Police told the Globe that the crash involved a car and Poitras' motorcycle.

Boston Fire officials said Poitras was appointed to the department on Oct. 31, 2016, and was assigned to Engine Company 42.

Prior to becoming a firefighter, the 31-year-old served four years in the United States Marine Corp where he participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Poitras leaves behind his parents, Mark and Miriam, and his brother Joshua, a Lowell firefighter.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends and the members of the Boston Fire Department as we mourn his loss."
