Officer Injured During Standoff; Suspect Arrested

Police in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, say an officer was injured during a standoff with a man Wednesday.

Police responded to the apartment complex on Sayles Street for a report of a man showing a firearm in the hallway outside his apartment and banging on other tenants' doors.

Police say the man was identified as Justin Bettencourt, who was known to officers as being suicidal and in possession of weapons.

A perimeter was set up around his apartment and he eventually opened the door, letting police in. However, police say a violent struggle ensued and Bettencourt pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the suspect.

Necn affiliate WJAR reports a law enforcement source said one officer fired his gun when he saw the suspect with a gun. The shot missed and hit a door. The fragments from the door or the bullet hit the officer in the arm.

That injured officer was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

Police said Bettencourt was taken to a hospital for treatment, but he was ultimately not injured.

The incident remains under investigation.
