Officer Injured During Traffic Stop in Tyngsborough, Mass.

A Tyngsborough, Massachusetts police officer was injured during a traffic stop after the car he pulled over went in reverse and struck his cruiser early Saturday morning.

Officer Daniel Campbell, just two weeks out of the police academy, proceeded to exit his vehicle at 5:53 a.m. and confronted the suspect of the car he'd pulled over at gunpoint while other officers came to the scene.

The driver of the car was Camilo Cruz, 27, of Newton. He was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, malicious destruction of property and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Two other passengers were inside Cruz's car, one of whom was found to have multiple arrest warrants: Jose Reyes, 49, of Roxbury. He was subsequently arrested and held on warrants for larceny and drug possession.

Campbell was treated and released at a nearby hospital and will be OK. His cruiser, however, was totaled.

Both Cruz and Reyes are being held pending their arraignments on Monday in Lowell District Court.
