One person is dead following a police-involved shooting in Hartford Friday night.

Five officers were on scene when the shooting occurred and three of those officers had body cameras, which were recording, according to police.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. Friday night in the area of Russ Street and New Park Avenue.

Police said the suspect at some point charged officers, gaining control of one of their weapons at which point he was shot.

"As our officer approached, the driver of the vehicle exited the car and violently attacked the officer. Our officer used less than lethal force options to fight off the assault and subdue the driver," Interim Police Chief Jason Thody said.

Thody said a routine traffic stop took a dangerous turn after the suspect drove off, attempting to get on Interstate 84 West on the ramp off Capitol Avenue. The suspect tried to get around traffic but hit another car.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said he has seen the video and has asked prosecutors to release the footage from the cameras "as quickly as possible" to the public.

"This was a very dangerous situation," Bronin said.

The officers were in plainclothes, but were identifiable, according to the police chief.

Police don't know how many shots were fired or if gunfire was exchanged.

Investigators remained on the scene Saturday morning.

Connecticut State Police and Tolland State's Attorney are now in control of the investigation.

Police said the last deadly officer-involved shooting in the city was in 2012.
