Officer Suspended Without Pay After Assault of Uber Driver

Boston Police Officer Michael Doherty was indicted on charges stemming from January incident

A Boston Police officer, indicted on charges stemming from the January assault of an Uber driver, has been suspended without pay.

Michael Doherty had been on administrative leave since his arrest.

On Jan. 4, officers responded to a call for a ride share driver stating that he had been assaulted by a passenger in the area of E. 1st St. and Farragut Rd. in South Boston. On arrival, officers spoke to the victim, an Uber driver, who stated that a passenger accused him of trying to drop him off at the wrong location.

The victim further stated that the suspect physically assaulted him when he stopped his vehicle in the area of E. 2nd and M Sts.

The driver also said the suspect got into the front seat of his car and drove off. The suspect fled before police arrived.

Doherty was later identified and placed under arrest.

Doherty is expected to appear in Suffolk Superior Court at a date to be determined.
