Officials: RI Firefighter Didn't Back Flag Burning

Providence firefighter Khari O'Connor said he put his hand up in support of a sign promoting equality

An internal investigation has found that a Providence firefighter's gesture at a protest of the recent grand jury decision in Ferguson, Missouri, was not a show of solidarity with demonstrators who burned the American flag.

Providence firefighter Khari O'Connor said he put his hand up in support of a sign promoting equality. An American flag was being burned outside the Providence Public Safety Complex at the time and O'Connor's gesture offended officers.

Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said Friday the investigation found no evidence to suggest O'Connor supported the desecration of the flag and that O'Connor understands how some could have misinterpreted his gesture.

Pare's statement said O'Connor was disciplined but did not release details, saying it was a confidential personnel matter.
