Officials are investigating the grisly discovery of a body on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn.
The body was found at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday on the westbound side of Interstate 90 near Exit 10, according to state police.
Officials shut down two lanes overnight and reopened the road by 5 a.m. after they removed the body.
No overpasses are in the immediate area nor were there any vehicles left behind, according to officials. There were no reports of people walking on the road, which leads to difficulty in finding the cause of the person's death and how they ended up on the Turnpike.
The victim suffered severe injuries, according to officials. Police are working to identify the body.
State troopers are seeking witnesses who traveled on the Mass. Turnpike around 10 p.m. for more information. Anyone who drove on the road at that hour is urged to call the Auburn Police Department at 508-832-7777.
