Officials: Suspect in Virginia Murder Shoots Self in Massachusetts

Authorities say a man wanted in connection with a homicide in Virginia shot himself in the head as police closed in on him in Massachusetts.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. says 43-year-old Dana William was taken to the hospital in critical condition after shooting himself as police entered a Fitchburg apartment where he was staying at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Early says William is originally from Fitchburg, a city of about 40,000 residents 50 miles west of Boston.

William is wanted in connection with the strangulation death earlier this month of 68-year-old Woddell Brooks in Amelia County, Virginia, and the disappearance of his wife, 68-year-old Olene Brooks. Authorities say William is their former son-in-law. She remains missing.

Early says William was recently released from prison.

The investigation is ongoing.
