Authorities ID Man Who Drowned While Fishing on Canton Pond

Authorities have identified a Massachusetts man who apparently drowned after falling off of his boat while fishing on a pond on Wednesday.

Canton police say 26-year-old James Paschal died after falling into Reservoir Pond around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A neighbor called 911 saying she heard a swimmer in Reservoir Pond calling for help, and that after seeing the man struggling and a small boat drifting away, she ran to ask for help and get a life preserver.

When she came back, she saw the man, identified later as Paschal, sink below the surface.

Officials say they recovered fishing gear in the small, unmanned dingy.

Divers recovered the Canton resident's body around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Police say a preliminary investigation suggests Paschal's death was accidental.

"Both the Canton Police and Canton Fire Departments grieve this tragic loss," Canton Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz said in a statement.
