Old Infrastructure Led to Massive Chelsea Sinkhole Officials Say

Prepare for continued traffic as crews work to repair a massive sinkhole in Chelsea.

Officials say old infrastructure led to a water main break and ultimately the sinkhole Thursday near the Chelsea Street Bridge. The sinkhole was discovered at 8:30 a.m. on Marginal Street, according to Chelsea Police Department Chief Brian Kyes.

"It was going to happen sooner or later because the infrastructure is old," Chelsea City Councilor Giovanni Recupero said. "We need to fix it. The city council, city manager and all that are trying to fix it. We're trying to make it a better place for people here to live."

Crews are expected to clear the scene by noon Friday.
