Authorities say a 48-year-old Stoughton man killed his wife at their apartment overnight and then attempted suicide - all while their two children were in the home.

Ilton Rodrigues of 5 Bennett Drive, Apt. 4, allegedly stabbed his 43-year-old wife, Telma Bras. Their 17 year old daughter called a family member during the incident, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office. The family member called police.

Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara called the scene "extremely violent."

The incident was reported shortly before midnight. The news release reported that their two children, a high school-aged daughter and an elementary-school aged son, ages 17 and 7 respectively, were home at the time.

"The call to police came from a relative outside the apartment who has been contacted by the older child, who heard the disturbance and reached out for help," according to authorities. "(The) children are safe at this hour. Appropriate services have been arranged for them as they experience this obviously traumatic period."

Rodrigues was taken to a Boston hospital trauma center for treatment of his injuries. He underwent surgery overnight and is in police custody. Investigators say he is expected to survive and will be arraigned at a later date.

During a press conference, McNamara said the household had no history of domestic violence and that Rodrigues only had traffic-related incidents on his record.
