One Dies, One Critical After Apartment Complex Fire

More than a dozen elderly residents suffered smoke inhalation

One woman died and another is in critical condition after a fire in an elderly apartment complex in Oxford, Maine, early Saturday mornin

More than a dozen people were treated for smoke inhalation from the fire, which started at about 2 a.m. at Oxford Meadows on Route 26, according to the state fire marshal's office.

Theresa Heino, 85, died and 65-year-old Virginia Brown is in critical condition at Stephens Memorial Hospital, being treated for smoke inhilation. 

The fire started in a common area and spread thick smoke throughout the building, authorities reported. Residents were taken to the nearby high school after being evacuated from their apartments. 

State fire marshals continue to investigate the cause and will call an electrical inspector in on Monday. Smoke detectors were working at the time of the fire though the building did not have fire sprinklers.
