Overnight Downpours Create Slick Spots Across Region, Accumulating Snow in Mountains

Overnight downpours were accompanied by thunder and in some cases, hail and snow.

While most of the heaviest action is done in southern New England, we have some bands of fairly heavy precipitation rotating across central and northern New England.

One band of particularly heavy snow and mix arcs from Maine through New Hampshire into southern Vermont, perhaps clipping northern Massachusetts.

In this band, we have snowfall rates of greater than one inch per hour, but temperatures are marginal and most of the accumulation is happening in higher elevations.

Some of the mountainous areas from Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine may end up with more than 6 inches of snow this morning before it tapers off. But the tallest mountains far west and north, and especially in the state of Maine, get more than a foot of snow Wednesday into Wednesday night and Thursday.

It’s a different story in southern New England, where we have a mixture of sun and clouds and it’s a fairly nice day. Wind from the west is pushing temperatures up into the mid-40s with a good amount of sunshine. But a rain or snow shower can happen anywhere at anytime.

Low pressure intensifies on the coast of Maine as it slows its' forward movement overnight Wednesday. That results in ongoing snow for northern and eastern Maine. For the rest of New England it's just windy and much colder. Temperatures by morning or in the teens and 20s.

Thursday is mostly sunny near the shore, but snow continues in the mountains west and north. High temperature in the 20s north, to low 30s south. Wind from the northwest is gusting past 40 mph.

High pressure from Canada moves in Friday, with diminishing wind and very cold air. A good amount of sunshine with a high temperature in the teens north and 20s south. Much the same for Saturday, but probably less wind.

Sunday features a weak trough coming in from the west, and a storm to our south. Right now it looks like most of the action should stay away, but there’s a slight chance we do end up with some snow especially in western and southern and New England. Otherwise partly sunny with a high temperature in the 20s once again.

Next week is challenging, as the cold may try and make a swipe at us, at the same time a series of storms continuing in off the Pacific.

For now, it just looks like a slow warming trend and fairly quiet to begin the week.
