9-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized After Shooting in Boston

No arrests have been made

A 9-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Police said the child was shot while in a playground on Annunciation Road in the middle of a housing complex at about 1 a.m.

“A little 9-year-old, how does a little 9-year-old get shot,” asked Abraham Oliva of Roxbury.

The violence happened during what neighbors said was a birthday party that lasted into the early morning hours.

One neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said the area is too dangerous for children to be out at night.

“It’s upsetting because I have grand kids around that age, it’s upsetting,” said the neighbor.

Resident Diane Williams said the sound of gunshots is traumatic but frequent. She told necn that in 2010, she was shot and wounded near the playground.

Just last year, William's neighbor 17-year-old D’Andre King-Settles was shot and killed in the same playground.

She said she was saddened but not shocked a child was the victim of violence, “...because bullets have no names, no names at all.”

The girl was taken to an area hospital where she underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

No arrests have been made at this time. Police said they are still trying to determine where the gunshots came from.
