PD: College Student Drunkenly Assaulted Officer

A Vermont college football player was arrested after police say he drunkenly assaulted a police officer.

The Rutland Herald reports Castleton University football player Noel Charbonnier pleaded innocent Monday to misdemeanor charges stemming from an incident early Sunday.

Police say the 18-year-old freshman was approached by an officer who asked if he'd been drinking. Charbonnier is accused of shoving the officer against a cruiser after he offered to give him a ride to his dorm.

Police say the officer hit Charbonnier with a stun gun three times and pepper-sprayed him after he tried to flee. They say his blood alcohol level was .188.

A university official says the school is working with police.

Charbonnier was freed on conditions including a curfew. His lawyer argued against it, citing Charbonnier's athletic commitments.
