Christmas Light Thief Turns Himself in to Police, Says He Was Drunk

The incident happened just before midnight on Dec. 16

The man wanted for stealing Christmas decorations in Lynn, Massachusetts, turned himself in to police on Wednesday.

The man was caught on surveillance video stealing part of a Christmas light display just before midnight on Dec. 16.

The suspect is seen walking up to the home in West Lynn, scoping out the porch and Christmas decorations and then leaving the area. He returns later, unplugs some cords, and takes the light projector and some other equipment.

Lynn Police said the suspect brought the light display with him to the police station on Wednesday, and it has been returned to the owner. The man was not arrested, as the homeowner chose not to pursue charges because it's Christmas. He told police that he had been drinking before he committed the crime.

The homeowner said she plans to put up the light display in her back yard where it will be harder to steal.

The high-demand holiday projector lights - which sell for about $40 - are all the rage this Christmas season, allowing people to illuminate their homes without going to the trouble of stringing up lights. But police across the country have received numerous reports of these light systems being stolen.

Several Connecticut homeowners reported having their light systems stolen within recent weeks, and were unable to buy new ones because they are sold out at many stores.
