Panel Drafting Rules to Protect Iconic Boston Citgo Sign

A permanent landmark designation would require public hearings and approval by the city council and Mayor Marty Walsh

The iconic Citgo sign in Boston's Kenmore Square would be more likely to stay under protections being sought by the city's landmarks commission.

According to The Boston Globe, the panel is drawing up a draft report that would restrict the ability of the new owners of the building on which the 3,600-square-foot sign sits to make any substantial changes to the sign.

A permanent landmark designation would require public hearings and approval by the city council and Mayor Marty Walsh.

A Citgo sign has been part of Boston's skyline since 1940. The current sign dates to 1965, and is visible over the famed left field wall at nearby Fenway Park.

Boston University recently agreed to sell the building to a local developer, raising hopes among preservationists that the sign will stay.
