Dorchester Man Arrested After Striking Pedestrian, Fleeing Scene

A Dorchester man has been arrested for numerous offenses after striking a pedestrian and fleeing the scene Friday night, according to MBTA Transit police.

The 31-year-old man, whose name has not been released, will be arraigned Monday in Dorchester District Court for fleeing the scene of an accident with personal injury, driving while intoxicated and illegal possession of a firearm.

According to Transit PD, officers saw the man speeding before striking a pedestrian who was crossing the street shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Dorchester Avenue.

The hit-and-run victim, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive.

After hitting the pedestrian, authorities say the driver crashed into three parked vehicles at the intersection of Adams and Beaumont streets, less than a mile away. Following the crash, police say the suspect discarded a loaded firearm while attempting to flee on foot.

Officers were able to apprehend the suspect and recover the firearm.

"Our officers on their police motorcycles, despite great danger to their personal safety, followed and ultimately apprehended an armed suspect. Their courageous efforts are a credit to law enforcement officers everywhere and we are proud of them and grateful they were not seriously injured," Superintendent Richard Sullivan said.

It's unclear if the suspect has a lawyer.

The incident is under investigation.
