A 34-year-old Sacramento, California man died after he was hit by a car on Interstate 95 North in Orange early Monday morning while retrieving the cell phone he had dropped, according to state police.

State Police responded to I-95 near exit 41 around 2:30 a.m. after a pedestrian walked from the median into the left lane and was struck by an Acura MDX.

Police have identified the man as Hoa Ngo. They said he and three friends were in a pickup towing a boat trailer when Ngo accidentally dropped his phone out the window. The truck stopped along the shoulder of the highway and Ngo ran across three lanes, got his phone and was struck as he was walking back across the highway, according to state police.

Police said a 30-year-old New London woman was driving the vehicle and a 5-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were also in the vehicle. The three people in the car were not hurt.

    Everyone involved is cooperating.
