One teenager is dead and another female is in a hospital with "significant injuries" after they were hit by a vehicle in Needham, Massachusetts.

Early Saturday evening, Needham police responded to a motor vehicle crash involving two pedestrians, according to the Norfolk district attorney's office.

When police arrived they found two females with significant injuries.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where 16-year-old Talia Newfield of Needham died.

The second pedestrian, identified as Adrienne Garrido, a 16-year-old Needham High school female student, remains in a Boston hospital with significant injuries.

There are no charges at the time in the accident. The crash is still under investigation.

"The loss of a young person who was a daughter and sister within a loving family and a vibrant member of the school community is difficult to comprehend," Needham Public Schools Superintendent Dan Gutekanst said in a letter to parents on Sunday, adding that "we pray for a speedy and full recovery" for the injured student.

The cafeteria at Needham High School, where the teens were students, was open to students for a few hours on Sunday to allow them to talk to counselors and each other.

Counselors and other support and resources will be made available to students through the week.
