72-Year-Old Man in Wheelchair Hit by Truck, Killed

A 72-year-old man in a wheelchair has died being hit by a truck in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

Police say the man was struck around 3:15 p.m. while crossing the intersection of Old Westford Road and the Drum Hill Traffic Square.

A MedFlight helicopter was called to the scene of the crash, but because the man's condition was unstable, the airlift was called off. He was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 5 p.m.

The intersection where the crash happened connects drivers to Routes 3 and 4. Police say it's busy, but not necessarily dangerous.

"Just a tragic accident," said Chelmsford Police Sgt. Phil Dube.

The victim was in the crosswalk, but police are not sure whether he had a light signifying it was safe to cross.

Police say a 45-year-old man from Hudson, New Hampshire, was driving the Ford pickup truck that hit the victim. He is cooperating with the investigation, according to police, and it is not believed that drugs or alcohol were factors.

No charges have been filed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
