Police say they've identified the driver of a blue pickup truck seen in surveillance video speeding by two students in a crosswalk outside a Maine middle school Tuesday.
William Layman of Augusta, Maine, was arrest Friday on charges of criminal mischief and endangering two pedestrians. He was also assessed a $180 fine for allegedly failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Fryeburg police said in a statement.
The 72-year-old failed to stop for the boys, one of whom was standing in the crosswalk while the other appears to be on the curb, police said. The vehicle speeds over the crosswalk sign, leaving it on its side in the street.
"The driver is now taking responsibility for his actions and cooperating with investigators," Fryeburg police Chief Joshua Potvin said in the statement.
The boys were on their way to get lunch at a nearby market, according to Potvin.
The incident took place in front of Fryeburg's Molly Ockett Middle School on Route 302 across from the town public safety building.
A bystander later reported the incident after hearing a bang caused by the truck hitting a sign in the crosswalk, police said at the time.

Layman will appear in Bridgton District court on December 10 for arraignment. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to the charge.
