Pilot Seriously Injured in Helicopter Crash at Maine Airport

A helicopter pilot was seriously injured in a crash at an airport in Maine on Saturday morning.

Jack White, 50, of Bowdoinham, Maine, was transported to Maine Medical Center after crashing his helicopter at Sanford Regional Airport while practicing what appeared to be landing or near-ground maneuvers around 10:24 a.m. Per witnesses on the scene, he was close to the ground when the aircraft began spinning uncontrollably.

White was the only person aboard the helicopter. He was on a cross country flight as part of the process to obtain his helicopter license. White was flying from Sanford to several locations throughout Maine and New Hampshire before returning to the Sanford Airport.

No word is yet available on White's condition.

The FAA says it will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the crash.
