A man who was reportedly seen in the Central Village section of Plainfield, prompting a shelter in place for residents, is dead, police said.

Plainfield police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Deibler Lane and Black Hill Road around 3:15 p.m. for reports of a man with a gun.

State troopers assisted Plainfield officers in searching the area and the man was found in a wooded area. The man shot at officers and officers shot back before the man ran from the scene.

Residents on Black Hill Road, Jackson Road, Picket Road, Diebler Lane and Karen lane were asked to stay inside their homes when a shelter in place was activated in the area.

Police used a drone and helicopter to help them locate the man.

The unidentified man was found dead in the woods sometime after his original encounter with police.

Route 14 was closed due to police activity but has since reopened, CT DOT said.
