Hundreds Brave the Cold for the L Street Brownies Plunge

Hundreds of swimmers took a dip in Boston Harbor on Sunday for the annual L Street Brownies New Year's Day Plunge. The Brownies are the oldest “polar bear” club in America and the plunge has been taking place for 113 years. (Published Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017)

Polar plunges will be on for some and off for others on this brutally cold New Year's Day.

The Jan. 1 forecast calls for a high of 11 degrees, which is ideal for real polar bears but hazardous for humans.

Yarmouth Police said the 8th Annual Polar Plunge at Smugglers Beach scheduled for New Year's Day has been postponed until Jan. 21 at noon.

Authorities said that a few brave participants are willing to dive in, but the wind chill is expected to be below 0.

"The consensus was that this community and family event will be better enjoyed and attended when conditions are more tolerable later this winter," said Yarmouth Deputy Chief of Police Steven G. Xiarhos in a statement.

The Monument Beach Polar Club plunge in Bourne has also been postponed until Jan. 27.

Despite the cold, the annual L Street Brownies New Year’s Day Plunge is still on.

Dan Monahan, interim director of the Boston Centers for Youth and Families’ Curley Community Center, is urging those participating to use their best judgment. He said participants should wear water shoes or something on their feet due to the cold temperature, as well as shells and rocks left by the tide.

Every year, hundreds of people take a dip in the icy waters for what's known as one of Boston's oldest traditions.

The Brownies are the oldest “polar bear” club in America. This year's plunge will be the club's 114th.
