A Vermont teen broke into a police department's evidence room and stole drugs and handguns, according to state police
Nineteen-year-old Mikeal Rivers of Troy faces several charges, including burglary, possession of narcotics, obstruction of justice and grand larceny.
According to state police, probation and parole officers called Newport police Sunday night after finding evidence bags with missing contents in a residence in Newport City. When Newport police went to the department's evidence room, authorities say they found that the room had been entered by force through a broken window in the door.
Officials say Newport police officers were on their way to the residence when they say they saw Rivers walking on Main Street. Rivers, who had been a suspect in an earlier incident, allegedly attempted to run away when he saw the officers, but was arrested. State police say Newport police found evidence, including drugs and handguns, that had been taken from the police department's evidence room.
State police add they and officers with the Orleans County Sheriff's Department are helping with the investigation.
Newport police are completing an inventory of the evidence room to determine what was taken.
Rivers is set to be arraigned Monday at 1 p.m. He's being held at the Northern State Correctional Center.
