Police: Boxing-Related Death Is a Homicide But Not Criminal

Police in Burlington, Vermont say the death of a 29-year-old man who was critically injured during a boxing match with a friend is a homicide but not criminal.

The Burlington Free Press reports police aren't pressing charges in the death of Ryan Murphy. Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo says evidence shows that there wasn't intent to commit a crime.

Murphy was sparring around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at his Burlington home when was struck in the head. Police say he lost consciousness and was brought into his house.

Police say Murphy's roommate later called 911 when he was found unresponsive. Emergency personnel performed CPR but he died.

Police haven't released the identity of the person who was sparring with Murphy.

It's unclear if alcohol played a role in the incident.
