Police: Bus Driver Swerves Into Town Commons After Brakes Fail

It was a scary moment for a bus driver in New Hampshire when the brakes gave out while she was driving through heavy traffic.

Police say 69-year-old Barbara Sowerbutts was driving a town school bus on Ferry Street toward Library Street. There was heavy traffic in the intersection, so she tried to slow down, but police say the brakes failed.

Sowerbutts swerved, hitting a trash can, a utitlity pole and a military cannon in the town square.

No children were on the bus at the time and Sowerbutts was not injured.

Police say the accident was due to faulty brakes and that Sowerbutts will not be charged.
