Police Charge Vermont Man With Trying to Stab, Shoot Cousin

Authorities say a Vermont man tried to shoot his cousin after unsuccessfully trying to stab him with a sword.

WPTZ-TV reports the 64-year-old man was arraigned Wednesday in Orange County Court and pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

Barre City police officers were called to a residence on Washington Street around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday after officers say the suspect's cousin called 911 saying he had been shot.

Investigators say the two men got into a fight outside the home. They say one man went to his cousin's apartment door with a sword and tried to stab him. Officials say he then returned with a pistol and shot through the exterior door, missing by inches.

Officers say the alleged victim suffered injuries to his arm from shrapnel.
