Police Chief Apologizes After Misconduct Probe

City Manager Michael Stern says he will reappoint the chief but the council must still ratify the appointment with a vote expected next month

The police chief in Hallowell, Maine, has apologized to city councilors for a relationship with a female subordinate who has accused him of sexual assault.

The Kennebec Journal reports that Chief Eric Nason said Monday night that his "lack of judgment" had hurt his family and caused embarrassment to the community.

Nason is fighting to keep his job. City Manager Michael Stern says he will reappoint the chief but the council must still ratify the appointment with a vote expected next month.

Nason previously received a written reprimand after an investigation of the female officer's complaint. He was not criminally charged and has said the relationship was consensual.

Several members of the public spoke at Monday's meeting in support of the chief.
