Police: Drunk Woman Crashed Twice With Kids in Car, Fled

A Massachusetts woman was drunk when she fled the scenes of two separate Arlington crashes, one of which caused life-threatening injuries, when she had two young children in the car, police say.

Lillian Claudio, 35, of Winthrop, faces a litany of charges in the crashes, which happened Saturday evening. Police allege that she was involved in a three-car crash in the intersection of Warren Street and Wyman Street around 6 p.m.

Claudio's Kia Optima, police say, hit a Ford Explorer, which spun completely around and caused a 33-year-old man to be ejected.

That man sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.

From there, Claudio drove on Broadway before running a stop sign on Wyman Street while heading back to Warren Street, police say. She hit a Nissan Murano and then slammed into a parked F350, according to police.

The parked truck was unoccupied. Two people who were in the Nissan were treated at the scene but were not hospitalized.

When police stopped Claudio, they say there was a strong odor of alcohol. There were two adult passengers and two children in the car.

According to police, the children were not buckled or in age-appropriate car seats.

The charges against Claudio include causing serious injury in an OUI crash, child endangerment while OUI, negligent operation, leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury, leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage and having children between the ages of 6 and 12 in the vehicle without seat belts.

"These reckless actions resulted in numerous serious injuries and violations of the law," Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a statement. "This is an unfortunate example of what happens when someone gets behind the wheel while impaired."

Claudio was held on $100,000 cash bail in Cambridge District Court on Monday, If she is she must wear a GPS monitoring bracelet under house arrest, submit to testing four times per day with an in-home sobrietor, and have no contact with any witnesses. She will appear in court again on Oct. 27.
