Police say an ex-FBI director will not face charges after he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car into a tree.
Louis Freeh, 64, told police he has no memory of how the crash occurred.
Police say Freeh's lack of recollection, the circumstances of the crash, and a lack of mechanical problems lead them to believe he fell asleep and drifted off the roadway. They say a lack of memory is common in crashes of this nature.
On Aug, 25, Freeh was traveling south on Route 12 in Banard, Vermont, when he drove off the roadway. He struck a mailbox and a row of shrubs before his vehicle came to a rest on the side of a tree.
Freeh was transported by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire for treatment.
Freeh's current condition is unknown. He is an ex-FBI director and a resident of Wilmington, Deleware.
No one else was injured in the crash.
