Police Investigate 3 Fatal Heroin Overdoses in Lynn, Mass.

The police chief says he suspects the heroin was laced with the painkiller fentanyl

Police in Lynn, Massachusetts, are investigating three apparently unrelated fatal heroin overdoses in the city in a 48-hour period.

Chief Kevin Coppinger said Sunday he suspects the heroin responsible for the deaths late last week was laced with the painkiller fentanyl, which is often added to increase potency.

The deaths were at three different locations. The victims were men, ages 28, 38 and 44.

Coppinger tells The Daily Item he cannot remember so many fatal overdoses in such a short period of time.

Police say overdoes in the city have gradually increased over the past few years as heroin prices on the street have plummeted.
