Hartford, Vermont, police are investigating the death of a man found on the railroad tracks in White River Junction.

Police say the body of 52-year-old Scott Smith was found by the crew of a slow-moving trail just after midnight Wednesday about 100 yards from the White River Junction Amtrak station.

It's likely the train that struck Smith was unaware it had hit him.

Police say that prior to his death Smith had been warned on more than one occasion to stay off the tracks and on Sept. 27 he was given a criminal citation for trespassing on railroad property.

Hartford police say they'd like to speak with anyone who had contact with Smith in the hours before his death.
