Maine State Police say one man was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Oakfield on Friday morning.

The shooting took place outside the Oakfield Thriftway store on Ridge Road just after 11 a.m.

A team of three Maine State Troopers had gone to the store to arrest the man as part of an ongoing investigation when there was an armed confrontation between the man and one of the troopers.

John Corneil, 54, of Smyrna, was shot by a state police sergeant. He was taken to a hospital in Houlton for treatment before undergoing surgery at a Bangor hospital.

Bill Cosby arrived at the Montgomery County Courthouse early Monday, where a judge will decide if the 81-year-old comedian will go to prison as a result of his sexual assault conviction.

Police say Corneil was wanted on several warrants, with charges including assault, criminal threatening, terrorizing and reckless conduct.

Those charges stem from an incident in Smyrna, according to state police.

Sgt. Chad Fuller, a 20-year veteran of the Maine State Police, has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the incident is investigated.

Neither Fuller nor the other officers were injured in the shooting.

Police say Corneil challenged officers with a pellet gun they say resembled a Beretta 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

The Maine Attorney General's Office will investigate the incident, along with state police.

It was not immediately clear whether Corneil had a lawyer.
