Authorities: Police Officer Struck by Fleeing Vehicle

Police say they attempted to stop the vehicle in Salem, New Hampshire when it sped off, striking one of the officers involved in the stop

A Massachusetts man was arrested Friday after allegedly attempting to flee police in Salem, New Hampshire, and hitting one of the officers with his vehicle in the getaway.

Jairo Rodriguez, 25, of Haverhill is currently being held by the Haverhill Police Department on a fugitive from justice charge. Officers in Salem, New Hampshire are seeking numerous other charged against Rodrigurez, including reckless conduct, reckless operation; and disobeying an officer.

A large quantity of drugs was also located inside the vehicle, police said. Additional charged are expected to be brought against Rodriguez pending their identification.

The officer struck by Rodriguez in his attempt to flee law enforcement did not sustain any injuries.

Salem officers said they attempted to stop Rodriguez's vehicle at the intersection of Main and Bridge Streets for traffic infractions Friday. While police were conducting their investigation, Rodriguez allegedly accelerated suddenly and rapidly, causing the vehicle to fishtail into the leg of one of the officers.

Police say the vehicle fled down Route 97 crossing into Massachusetts. Officers continued to pursue the vehicle into Haverhill before it crashed on Vale Street, where the male driver fled the scene.

Officers from Salem and Haverhill, along with the Massachusetts State Police, conducted a search of the area.

Rodriguez was located on Lake Street in Haverhill and arrested without incident.

It is not yet clear whether he has an attorney.
