A police officer who was hit by a vehicle in Quincy, Massachusetts, on Friday morning is expected to make a full recovery.

State and local authorities say 14-year-veteran Detective Thomas Pepdjonovic was hit on the Fore River Bridge shortly before 11 a.m. Quincy fire officials said Pepdjonovic was working a paid detail.

Aerial video showed multiple police vehicles and an ambulance on the bridge, which just opened a few months ago and is still in the process of being completed.

Pepdjonovic was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious head and shoulder injuries, but is in stable condition, Quincy police say.

"He’s in a great deal of pain, but he is in good spirits," Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said.

A Quincy Police Department source said the female driver who hit the officer stopped after the crash.

"The woman was very forthcoming. She was very distraught when the incident occurred," Chief Keenan said.

Interstate 93 north was temporarily shut down at Neponset to assist in the escort of an ambulance leaving the scene.

Route 3A at the Fore River Bridge remains closed as the state police's crash reconstruction unit investigates, according to Quincy police.

Pepdjonovic is expected to remain at Boston Medical Center through Friday night. He is well known in the community for solving high profile cases such as the "Puppy Doe" case in 2013.
